My modem cannot connect. Why?

  • Did you hear the "dial tone"?
    When your modem starts to connect, you will first hear the "dial tone", which is the same tone you hear when you pick up the phone before dialing.  If you did not hear the "dial tone", that means either the modem is set to be silent, or the telephone line has been plugged into the wrong socket.  Please make sure the line is plugged into the "Line" or "Wall" socket of the modem, and connect again.
     
  • I heard the dial tone but my computer said "no dial tone"
    It may be that the modem cannot detect the dial tone even if it's there.  (This usually happens to modems bought from overseas without the Austel Approval label.)  You can tell your modem NOT to wait for dial tone before dialing from the Control Panel (under modem properties).
     
  • I can hear the modem dial but it keeps ringing with no answer
    Your modem connection would not "ring" as such.  You either got a connection or in rare occasions a busy tone, but you would never hear it "rings".  If you do, you probably have dialed the wrong number.  Please choose a number from Accsoft's dial-up number list and try again.
