        <=      <  1   Slow connection

My connection is very slow. Why?

  • Do you have a 56Kbps modem?
    If your modem is slow (e.g. 33,600 or less), it will take longer to transfer the same amount of information than fast 56Kbps modems.  Please upgrade to a faster modem.

  • Is your modem Austel Approved?
    Please check your modem and look for an Austel triangular mark.  If you cannot find one, please check with your modem vendor because it is illegal to use a modem on Australian telephone network without being approved by Austel.  Not only that it is against the law but also that it may have an impact on the speed and cause damage to your equipment and/or the telephone network.

  • Do you have a fast computer?
    If your computer is slow (eg lower than 200Mhz with 16 MB RAM or less), it may not be able display the graphics or movie quick enough.  You may need to upgrade your computer.

  • Which website were you visiting?
    If the website you're visiting is too busy, it may be slow in sending web pages to you.  You can find out by accessing other websites, preferrably in other region of the world.  If you get a good speed with other websites, but very low speed with a particular one, you may need to try that website later.

  • Are things slow across the board?
    In rare occasions of network congestion on our backbone or peer networks, access to the Internet may become slower than normal.  The situation is usually temporary as our network will adapt itself and ease the traffic as required.  Please try again later.

  • Nothing works.  What then?
    If you've checked all the above and it's still very slow, there might be some settings in your computer not set up properly.  Please check the settings or contact our Customer Services for assistance.
