Allowing your customers to logon to your website significantly increases the chance of revisiting. They simply come back to your site again and again. A user logon also allows you to track your customers so you know who came in when and saw which pages, instead of a mere report on bits and hits.
Once you can identify your visitors, you can make your website present different information to different groups of people. For example, you may want to present a general catalogue to the public but your price list to signed up customers only. If a customer has a VIP status, you can show a discounted price list instead etc.
You can invite visitors to sign up online and gain membership. Alternatively, if you want to check before approving an application, your website will email you and activate the new user only with your confirmation. All these can be done online with your Administrator password. As simple as that.
