Multiple Email Addresses for a Single Mail Box:

Have you ever thought about having more email addresses, so that you can

  • make your email address easier to remember,
  • use a temporary address for a one-off interaction,
  • share your mail box with family members, each wanting a different address?
  • change address to stop spamming, or simply
  • use different addresses for different people.
Now you can! By adding email aliases to your account, you can have multiple email addresses, all forwarding email messages into your main mail box.

This is a FREE service to all Accsoft Internet Members!

Questions and Answers?

  1. I got my email address already. Why bother?
    • Your current email address assigned to you upon AIM account opening refers to your main mail box on Accsoft's network. But you can have more email addresses attached to your main mail box. When people send a message to any of your email addresses, it will be sent to the same mail box of yours. The sender is not aware of the internal forwarding.
  2. Do I have more than one mail box and password?
    • No, you still have only one mail box. All other email addresses are only "aliases", which are just different names of the same mail box of yours. (Like you may have different names in dialy life for family, close friends, classmates or colleagues, but there's still only one YOU.)
  3. What do I use email aliases for?
    • To make email addresses which are easier to remember: Email names for aliasing are less restrictive than your User ID. They can be longer than 8 characters and can include uppercase or lowercase letters, hyphen ("-"), underscore ("_") and dot (".").
    • To remain anonymous: If you want to receive a message from a person or a company but don't want to give your real email address, you can add an email alias and give that instead. When later on you want to stop receiving messages from that person or company, you simply delete that email alias.
    • To share your mail box with others on the same computer: If there're many people sharing the same mail box and Internet account on the same computer (usually in a family), you can have a different email address for everyone. When an email message is received, you can tell whom it's for by the email address in the "To" field.
Also, when a particular member later on acquires a separate Accsoft User ID, password and mail box, he/she simply deletes the email alias from your account and adds it to his/her new account. No friends on the Internet need to be informed about the change.
Note: Messages for different members in a shared mail box are readable by other members, even with different email addresses. If privacy is a concern, please open a separate AIM account for each member.
  4. Will I be "spammed" more often if I have more email addresses?
    • NO, quite the contrary, you gain more control: Spammers collect email addresses mostly via the Internet. If you use only an email alias for web surfing and newsgroups, when you find email spamming via that email alias, you can delete it and add a new one. You can give your new email address to friends only so that they can find you again.
    • You can distinguish groups of senders easily: By the same token, you can give different email addresses to different groups of people so that you can "sort" or "filter" your received messages by the "To" field either manually or automatically. And when you want to stop receiving messages from a group of people, you can simply delete the email address that the group of people know you by. They will not be able to send you messages anymore until you add the email address back.
  5. How do I tell others about my other email addresses?
    • Besides all traditional ways such as by words, by phone/fax, by paper mail and by printed stationery, you can tell your friends your email address simply by sending them an email message. All you need to do is to change your "Reply-to" (or "Return address") to the email address you want them to know. They will then see your new email address in the "From" field. When they reply to your email message or put you into the address book, your new email address will be used.
  6. Do I need to change any settings for those new email addresses?
    • Only the "Reply-to address" (which will appear in the "From" field of your sent email messages). Here's how to change it:
      • Netscape Communicator 4:
Please find "Edit" from the menu bar then click ...
        Edit|Preferences...|Mail & Groups|Identity
then enter your new email address as "Reply-to address".
      • Internet Explorer 4 (Outlook Express):
Please find "Tools" from the menu bar then click ...
        Tools|Accounts...|Mail|mail.accsoft.com.au|Properties
then enter your new email address as "Reply address".
      • Netscape Navigator 3:
Please find "Options" from the menu bar then click ...
        Options|Mail and News Preferences...|Identity
then enter your new email address as "Reply-to address".
      • Internet Explorer 3 (Internet Mail):
Please find "Mail" from the menu bar then click ...
        Mail|Options...|Server
then enter your new email address as "Email Address".

You still use your User ID as your "Mail server user name" or "POP account name" (depending on how it's called in your email program), and all mail server settings are exactly the same as before. Remember, you still have only one mail box and one password, and are connecting to the same mail server.

OK, I want to add more email addresses now.
